About Us

Mottram & Maines is a residential architecture and design firm that brings together integrated design and practical building science to create homes connected to place and to the way you live. From the beginning, design quality, comfort, indoor air quality, durability, climate performance, and budget are considered together.

Our work starts with lived experience. How the home feels in the morning. How light moves through it. How quiet it is. How clean the air feels. How well it holds up over time. Behind those outcomes are thoughtful decisions about enclosure, moisture control, ventilation, materials, and detailing, carried through a steady, collaborative process.

The goal is a home that feels good to live in, performs reliably through the seasons, and stays coherent through construction. Mottram & Maines grew out of years of collaboration, shared teaching, and ongoing contributions to the building science and residential design communities.

“Since working with Emily, we’ve transitioned to a fully electric, solar-powered home and reduced our annual energy costs by thousands—even after adding an electric vehicle. We’re extremely impressed with the results.”

Most people reach out because they want a home that feels calm and comfortable, with clean air, steady temperatures, and details that are built to last.
