About Us
Mottram & Maines is a residential architecture firm that combines integrated design and practical building science to deliver new homes, additions, and major renovations. You get a process where comfort, durability, performance, and design are aligned from day one.
Our work starts with how you actually live and stays grounded in practical building science, carried through a steady, collaborative process. The goal is not a signature style. It is a home that feels good to live in and performs well through the seasons. Mottram & Maines grew out of years of collaboration, shared teaching, and ongoing contributions to the building science and residential design communities.
“Since working with Emily, we’ve transitioned to a fully electric, solar-powered home and reduced our annual energy costs by thousands—even after adding an electric vehicle. We’re extremely impressed with the results.”

Most people reach out because they want a home that feels calm and comfortable, with clean air, steady temperatures, and details that are built to last. Our work is guided by the Pretty Good House (PGH) approach, a practical, performance-first mindset that keeps comfort, durability, and sensible energy use aligned with architecture and budget from the start.
